  • Deceased's name: Jackson Powell Bayer
  • Age: 77
  • Date: June 2, 2012
  • Hometown: Summit

Jackson Powell Bayer passed away peacefully in Summit, N.J., on June 2, 2012, surrounded by his family.  He had suffered from Parkinson's Disease for several years and was 77.  A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 15, at Long Hill Chapel in Chatham, N.J.

Mr. Bayer was born on May 25, 1935, and raised in St. Louis, Mo., where he met and married his bride of 55 years, Judith Edwards.  His near 50-year career in the securities industry began at A.G. Edwards, where he worked in the St. Louis headquarters for 14 years before moving his wife and three red-headed daughters to Summit.  He then worked for several prominent New York investment houses.  Jackson was a firsthand witness to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in which he lost many friends and colleagues.  He retired as a managing director at CIBC Oppenheimer & Co. in 2003.

Jackson loved big band music, jazz and hymns.  He played and watched many happy hours of golf, favored history and biographies, and served as an usher at his church.  He exercised religiously and was a master of his decktop grill.  He was a member of the New York Athletic Club and Canoe Brook Country Club.  In addition to his devoted wife, Jackson is survived by his brothers, Donald and Gary, and daughters, Constance Gore (William) of Summit, N.J., Barbara Lee (Douglas) of Columbus, Ohio, and Amy Bayer of Alexandria, Va. He was the treasured grandfather of Amy, Caroline, William, Lauren, Brooke, Emily, Nathaniel and Jackson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Overlook Foundation, Summit, N.J., to benefit the hospital's in-patient hospice program.
