Registration Open for Summit Police Youth Academy
The Summit Police Department will be accepting applications from students ages 11-14 for the 2010 session of its Youth Academy starting May 1. Two sessions are available, each lasting one week, from July 12-16 and from August 16-20. Both sessions will be held at the Summit Police Departmen from 8 aam-2pm daily.
In its sixth year, this popular program is unique among youth academy programs because the Summit Police Youth Academy is modeled after the police academy rather than a day camp. Cadets wear uniforms, undergo physical training and daily training in Drill and Ceremony, and receive instruction in criminal investigation techniques, evidence recovery, patrol practices and the effects of alcohol and drugs. They will also take field trips to the Union County Police Academy and attend demonstrations by specialized law enforcement units, such as the police K-9 unit, SWAT team and bomb squad. Each session will conclude with a lunch and swim session at the Summit Family Aquatic Center.
Each cadet will receive official Summit Police Youth Academy uniforms to wear throughout the course. Upon successful completion of the course the cadets will participate in a graduation ceremony in which they will be presented with a certificate of completion and an official Summit Police Youth Academy patch.
Qualified applicants ages 11-14 will be selected based upon the return date of their application and tuition payment of $85.00. Preference will be given to Summit residents who are new applicants; former recruits and out-of-town applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Financial aid is also are available.
Applications will be available at the Police Department, the Summit Middle School Office, and online at http://www.ci.summit.nj.us/. Applications will be accepted beginning May 1 and the submission deadline is June 1.
