Summit Sailing Team Competes in New Orleans Regatta
Four Juniors from the Summit High School Sailing Team traveled to New Orleans on November 9th to compete in the Great Oaks High School Regatta. Teams from 40 high schools from across the country competed in two days of racing and completed a total of 55 individual races. The Summit sailors enjoyed meeting sailors from all around the country and loved the great New Orleans cuisine of the French Quarter.
The Summit squad consisted of Jake Groskoph, Amy Macdonald, Will Elia and Will Berkery. The regatta was sailed on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain directly in front of the Southern Yacht Club. Wind conditions ranged from 12-15 knots on Saturday to 15-20 knots on Sunday.
Summit finished 12th overall in the silver fleet and their best finishes came in the heavy air on the second day of the regatta. Skipper Jake Groskoph said it was the most fun he had ever had at a regatta.
The winner of the silver fleet was Long Beach High School from California and the gold fleet was won by the Ransom Everglades School from Florida. It was a great experience for the Summit team and they are excited about the possibility of going back again in 2013.
