Summit High School Sailing Team Participates in NJ State Championships
The Summit Sailing Team had fantastic weather to sail the NJ State Championships in Toms River, May 19.
Twelve teams competed from across New Jersey. The race committee ran 14 races, 7 each for the A fleet and the B fleet.
Racing started at 10:00 and finished up around 3:30. It was a long tiring day. The winner of the championship was Toms River South High School with no finish worse than 5th.
Summit finished the day in 10th position overall, edging out Southern Regional and Colts Neck High Schools with lots of good finishes within the overall score.
Jake Groskoph and KK Newsham finished 6th in race number two in the A fleet. Will Elia and Will Berkery received a 4th and two 5ths in races three, five and seven the B fleet. Alex Guior and Mike Freidin finished 7th in race five, also in the B Fleet.
Today’s regatta was the final event of the 2012 spring season. The squad that represented Summit High School at the state championships was made up of all freshmen and sophomores, competing against teams that were largely juniors and seniors. Our young team is well positioned to continue rising through the ranks of the New Jersey Interscholastic Sailing League as many of their competitors head off to sail at the collegiate level. The team is looking forward to summer club sailing and then getting back together in September for the fall 2012 High School season.
