Ba'Shawn Mickens Breaks Summit Basketball All-Time Scoring Record

Late in fourth quarter against Johnson Thursday night, #3 senior point guard surpassed the 1,224-record set by WVU star Wellington Smith, according to The Star-Ledger.

Ba'Shawn Mickens is on fire.

After scoring his 1,000th career point in a game against Hillside in mid-January, the senior point-guard became Summit's all-time leading scorer for the Summit Boys' Varsity Basketball team on Thursday night, surpassing the 1,224-record that was set by West Virginia University star and Summit native Wellington Smith in 2005.

According to The Star-Ledger, #3 Mickens scored 20 points during the Hilltoppers' victorious 53-32 performance over A.L. Johnson Thursday night, surpassing Smith's record by just three points near the end of the fourth quarter.

"He appreciated his teammates helping him to accomplish this," Summit coach Dave White told The Star-Ledger. "But it was more important that we got the win and the goals that we have in front of us. He's really kind of a special kid in that regard."

When Patch spoke with Mickens on Thursday afternoon, he said becoming Summit’s all-time leading scorer was always one of his personal goals and accomplishing that goal “would feel surreal for me.”

“My freshman year, I told coach I would be breaking Wellington Smith’s record when I played varsity, and I’m actually about to break it,” Mickens told Patch.

Mickens, who moved to Summit during his freshman year, trains under Smith at the Wellington Smith Basketball Academy and he worked very hard with Smith during the off-season.

“He’s been pushing me every day,” Mickens said.
