Community Begins Healing Process with Community Memorial

More than 1,000 people attended the community memorial service for Abelino Mazariego, the 47-year-old Summit resident who was allegedly beaten to death by at least three area teenagers on July 17.

Residents gathered at city hall and then proceeded to walk down Springfield Avenue to the Promenade where the brutual attack allegedly occured. There, residents laid flowers and paid their respects.

The memorial then continued to the village green for a short service.

Rabbi Avi Friedman said that the community will never forget Abelino Mazariego.

"And we will never let this happen again," he said.

Three area teenagers, including two from Summit, have been charged in connection with Mazariego's death. 18-year-old Kharyi Williams-Clark, 19-year-old Morristown High School graduate Nigel Dumas and an unidentified 17-year-old minor have all been charged with murder.

Terri Tauber said she felt the need to come Wednesday night as a way to join in the community healing process.

"You just want to do something," she said. "You feel powerless."
