Poll: Has 'Jerzday' Run Its Course?

'Jersey Shore' is over half-way through Season 5, but have you had just about enough with Snooki, 'The Situation' and MTV's influence Down the Shore?

It's by far one of the most dominant shows on cable television, and for three years has brought itself glory and infamy for slogans such as GTL (gym, tanning and laundry), characters like Snooki and the funky term: Jerzday ( #Jerzday for the Twitter-literate ).

The term that every New Jersey parent who wants to stay hip should know is a viral internet chant that signals the millions of fans to flock to MTV to experience the latest installement of the "Jersey Shore". It's safe to say that no other show in history with the word "Jersey" in the title has ever reached this level of success.

While lots of New Jerseyans might like the show, it's not accepted in every community, such as Hoboken which wouldn't give the OK to a #Jerzday-related spin-off co-starring Snooki (who gets paid $2 million this season). Now, that show will be Jersey City's to handle. The success of the Jerzday phenomenon may be wearing thin, though no plans to discontinue the show have surfaced. Tonite's fifth season's eigth episode.

The Jersey shore currently has an audience around 5.6 million people, according to the website TV by the numbers. Last season, the entire episode run averaged just over 9 million people each week. The franchise breaks out even bigger when another MTV show focused on DJ Pauly D's music career (in which 50 Cent and Britney Spears are involved) gets its premiere later next month.

And it's not all bad news about the show. It's considered a boon to local New Jersey business owners. According to a recent Toms River Patch article, its seems like infamy is good for the cash register.

“In a time when we're struggling, it brought families back to the shore,” said Tony Rivoli, owner of Rivoli’s Italian and Seafood Restaurant on Fischer Boulevard. He said his establishment has become “the unofficial restaurant of the ‘Jersey Shore’” since it first appeared on the show in season three.

Still, it's clear that problems often aren't far for the constantly partying Jersey Shore cast, and their reputations are well deserved. Other negative publicity the show has generated is for its love of the "guido/guidette" stereotype, which came under fire from Italian American groups.

Tonight's episode, entitled "The Follow Game" airs on MTV from 10:00p.m. to 11p.m. with repeats through the night from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.
