New Providence, Summit Close In On Emergency Dispatch Center Agreement

New Providence Council approved resolution, ordinance. Summit Common Council to vote on both tonight. Are you in favor of shared dispatch center? Vote in our poll below.

New Providence and Summit are moving closer to a shared dispatch center, which would provide emergency police, fire and EMS services for residents in both communities.

Last week, New Providence Council approved a resolution and an ordinance to move forward with this shared service. The identical resolution and ordinance is on the Summit Common Council’s agenda for their meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. If approved, this agreement will lay the groundwork for how both towns will bring the proposed “New Providence & Summit Emergency Services Dispatch Center” to fruition.

Summit acquired two federal grants that total $1.6 million, which would provide this joint venture with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, said Doug Marvin, New Providence Borough Administrator, at the Nov. 26 Council meeting. However, the grants cannot be used to construct the facility, which will be housed in the New Providence Municipal Center, located at 360 Elkwood Ave. Instead, each community will contribute $350,000 to cover construction costs.

Overtime, both towns could save more money than before. Plus, Summit and New Providence could be a service provider for other communities that would like to share the dispatch services, according to ordinance, which could generate revenue to offset operational costs for each town. Right now, Millburn Fire Department is included in this shared service agreement and would pay fees for the center to respond to emergency calls.

Originally, Berkeley Heights was included with this proposed dispatch center. However, earlier this year, Township Council decided Berkeley Heights would run its own emergency dispatch services. From there, New Providence and Summit adjusted their plans.

This is exactly the type of consolidation activity we need across ALL aspects of local government and local schools districts.

The barrier to such 'logical' consolidation will be the age old problem of man... ego, power, control and authority. In any consolidation there are winners and losers... those that stay and those that go. These bureaucrats could care less about the people that pay for this whole thing - the tax payer.

In most other states a school district consists of multiple high schools - not New Jersey. Every town or burg is it's own district with 1 high school??? Nonsense.

Given the demographics of our area we could easily have 1 school district with Summit, New Prov, Springfield ( all in Union county for tax purposes); 1 Superintendent and a couple Associate Superintendents; 1 office - not 3; 1 office of admin staff - not 3; etc...

New Jersey needs to be drug into the 21st century!

Jersey is ripe with opportunities to consolidate and save.

Consolidating anything especially education on a county wide basis would be a terrible idea. It would take control away from Summit residents and give it to the inefficient and corrupt Union County Democratic Machine. That is why I have long favored that NJ follow in Conn's footsteps and eliminate county government.

On the other hand, combining the school systems of Summit and New Providence hopefully would mean that Summit would benefit from the higher rated NP school system and leave opportunities to save money through economies of scale.

This is a good first step. I would like both towns to look at other services they could share. I would look and sharing anything and everything including police, fire and even school administration. Sharing services and people between Summit and New Providence offers great opportunities to both improve services AND save money.

Its good to see governments giving up fiefdoms in an attempt to save the taxpayer money. Also this help the emergency services in both town work better together

Why not take advantage of the County dispatch center which already exists and provides services to other towns in the County rather then building new?
