And the streak goes on.
The Summit High boys lacrosse team advanced to the Tournament of Champions final after stopping the Delbarton School, 10-5, in a semifinal round matchup at Kean University on Wednesday.
Summit will face Bridgewater-Raritan High School in the T of C finals at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Rutgers University.
Fueled by a strong defensive performance by Summit goalie Pete Badgley and the Hilltoppers’ defensive unit, Summit never trailed on Wednesday and took home the teams’ 68th consecutive victory.

“That’s all a credit to my defense right there,” Badgley said, who recorded 10 saves in the win. “They get out there and step in front of shots, stopping shots, it’s all them right there. It’s the middies, offense, even attacking and possessing the ball, it’s not just me. It’s a credit to the whole team.”
After senior Nick Kilkowski got Summit on the board a little over two minutes into the first quarter, the Hilltoppers caught fire.
Summit's Austin Carbone and Ryan Bringewatt added another two goals late in the first quarter – Bringewatt's goal coming with no time remaining in the quarter- giving Summit a 3-1 advantage.
Summit wouldn’t allow Delbarton within two goals of the lead for the remainder of the contest.
“The kids played well and we kind of got back to some of the things that we needed to,” Summit head coach Jim Davidson said. “Mike (Chang) was fabulous on the faceoff’s and really came up with some great ground balls. Pete Badgley and the defense had some great stops, and offensively I just thought that we played a pretty smart game.
Credit Delbarton, [they’re] athletic and they made couple of runs here and there, but every time they would make another push, it seemed like our defense would make a stop or we would come up with a big ground ball that led to a goal.”
In the second quarter Summit continued to pile it on as Sonny Round got in on the action, and Kilkowski netted his second and third goals of the day giving Summit a commanding 6-2 lead with 4:20 remaining.
But Delbarton would answer the Summit onslaught, making its most assertive push of the night, as they rallied for two straight goals to head into halftime trailing, 6-4.
“I’m not going to lie, we were a little disappointed,” Davidson said of the two late goals. “I think we were up 5-2 with about two minutes to go, and our plan was to kind of move the ball a little bit and find an opening. We ended up pressing the ball in there one or two times and it resulted in them getting a goal and a faceoff and a goal. So we had to regroup [at halftime] and just said, ‘you’ve got to win the third quarter.’
And the Hilltoppers headed their coach’s words as senior captain Terry McKenna scored twice in the half, including an amazing diving shot from in front of the Delbarton crease, launching Summit ahead 9-5.
“It just feels great [to have an impact],” McKenna said. “With our team, we’re so deep, anyone can make a play. Today I got lucky, I had a couple of chances and I was able to put some in.
As is the case with most of this Summit team, McKenna diverted any praise towards the rest of his Hilltopper group.
“It really starts with the defense,” he said. “Peter Badgely and Jules Godino, they were amazing today, they anchored everything. And then on offense, we just got possessions and we moved it around and eventually things just had to get open.”
Summit would add another goal with just over one minute remaining in the game, locking up the 10-5 win and advancing to its third consecutive TOC final and a chance at winning 69 straight games.
“I feels great, just an awesome win,” senior Mike Ford said. “They’re a great team and to come out here and get the ‘W’, it means so much, for our town, for our community, for our coaches. It’s unbelievable.”
While the streak continuing is an astonishing accomplishment to most people who have witnessed it, these players have no interest in discussing it.
“I’m not worrying about the streak, just going to worry about one more game,” Badgley said. “We want to reach our goal…we’re going to bring it that game. It’s going to be fun.”
