Q&A With Documentary Filmmaker at Calvary Church

"Opening Our Eyes" screens Jan. 25 as part of Interweave's foreign affairs programming.

Filmmaker Gail Mooney-Kelly traveled with her daughter in 2010 to six continents, documenting the stories of individuals who are inspiring others and creating positive change in the world.

The result is Opening Our Eyes, a feature-length film that tells the stories of people like Maggie Doyne, a 23-year old from Mendham, NJ, featured on the cover of the New York Times Magazine last October, who traveled to India for a gap year and stayed, opening a children’s home and school for orphans in Nepal.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Mooney-Kelly will discuss the making of the film and show excerpts. Come for a nourishing lunch; you will be inspired and moved to action. The event will take place at Interweave’s Summit Center, in Calvary Church, 31 Woodland Avenue in Summit. The cost is $30.

Explore crucial global issues at Great Decisions 2012
: Engaged Citizens Learning About the World. Co-sponsored by Interweave, Calvary Church, and the League of Women Voters of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit, use Great Decisions’ thought-provoking non-partisan study guide to explore the following areas of focus: Middle East Realignment, Promoting Democracy, Mexico, Cybersecurity, Exit from Afghanistan, State of the Oceans, Indonesia, and Energy Geopolitics.  Each session, led by a moderator, enables participants to make their views known to our national foreign policy makers through opinion ballots. This is the centerpiece of the longest running civic education program in the U. S. devoted to foreign affairs. Sign up for individual topics or, better yet, the whole series.

Class meets for eight Wednesdays at Interweave’s Summit Center in Calvary Church’s Parish Office at 31 Woodland Avenue in Summit, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The dates are Feb. 15, 22, 29, Mar. 7, 14, 21, 28, and Apr. 4, and tuition costs $95 for the general public, $85 for members of co-sponsoring groups, and $20 per drop-in session, plus the cost of the course manual.
