It's a small deal with large health benefits. When you go to the Summit Farmers Market today buy a little extra and donate it to the G.I.F.T "Give It Fresh Today" program.

Or, if your home garden has produced more than you or your neighbors need, bring that in. Local farmers will also donate something at the end of the day. The donated produce will go towards making nutritious meals for the needy and those who frequent the free meal programs in Summit and Newark.

S.H.I.P. (Summit Helping Its People) will help collect the donations and use the food for it weekday breakfast program at Calvary Episcopal Church and weekend dinner at Oakes Memorial Center. Another recipient will be St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Newark.

Bob Conway, a co-owner of Brownie Points Bakery and a trustee of Summit Downtown Inc, got the idea to bring the G.I.F.T. program to Summit from an unlikely place: Youtube.com. Conway says he was inspired after watching Hawaii school teacher Vivian Chau Best give a presentation about the G.I.F.T program at a TEDxHonolulu event.
