Like many other kids this summer, Madison is enjoying camp, hanging around the pool, and spending countless hours spinning her wheels – literally! Madison-Jade Bishop, 8, [of Summit] - is a competitive roller figure skater on her way to nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Madison is one of eight members of the All American Rollermagic competitive team heading to the 2012 Nationals this month.
The competitors range from 8 – 63 years of age, and compete in singles, team dance and figures.
While roller figure skating is not an Olympic sport, competitive roller figure skating has been around for many years, and the sport’s first national championship competition was held in 1937. Similar to their counterparts on the ice, the skaters train rigorously for a chance to compete at the Nationals and World Championships. Roller skating requires the same dedication, passion, athleticism, and hours of grueling practice as ice skating.
Along with the many hours of practice comes the financial challenge of getting our top contenders like Madison to Nationals and the World Championships. The All American Rollermagic team is hosting a Roller Skating Luau — Family Fun Night & Fundraiser on Thursday, July 12, at 6:30 p.m. at their home rink, South Amboy Arena, located at 270 N. Stevens Avenue, South Amboy.
This fundraiser will help generate money to offset the considerable traveling expenses for the team members participating at Nationals from July 22 – August 5.
The Roller Skating Luau will feature open skating for all, skating performances by our Team skaters, and many other activities. The event will also have a live D.J., photo fun booth, Henna tattoos, hula dancing, face painting, and most exciting of all, a chance to meet an NFL player and purchase NFL memorabilia! Tickets are $10.00 at the door for those over 3 years of age. You can also visit our page on Facebook to purchase tickets in advance.
Madison-Jade Bishop attends the Franklin School and will be entering 3rd grade this fall. Madison has been skating for 3 years — competitively for 2 of them. She practices four days a week and all of her hard work has paid. She placed 1st in 2 events at Regionals in Enola, PA, earning 2 gold medals qualifying her for Nationals in Lincoln.
This will be Madison’s 2nd year making it to Nationals and we are expecting to see her on the podium placing in one of three spots (gold, silver or bronze) in the juvenile/elementary c or primary girls singles, or both.
