Summit parking officials have announced changes to city lots and garages, which are currently being renovated. Lot parking times have changed and affect overnight parking as well as daily commuters. Park & Shop Lot #3 re-opens today and Lot #2 closes.

Here is a breakdown of the changes, provided by the city:

On Monday, July 16 Park & Shop Lot #3 will reopen. All prepaid overnight parkers can resume parking in Lot#3. Remember that all overnight parkers must remove their vehicles by 8 AM Monday through Saturday. Thank you for your patience during the construction phase. Work still needs to be completed in this lot such as the installation of equipment, shelters, gates, cameras, and entrance signs. If the lot needs to be closed for any reason, notice will be provided in advance.

PARK & SHOP LOT #2 - SUMMIT AND MAPLE - CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION - July 16
On Monday, July 16 Park & Shop Lot #2 will be closed for construction. All prepaid overnight parkers must park in a different parking lot.

It has always been difficult to park in Summit. Well today I found that it is impossible. I finally found a spot on the street this afternoon and to my astonishment was confronted with a meter that does not take money. I spent 15 minutes on my phone where it seemed I had to register to pay for my spot by entering my license plate number credit card number and expiration date. Then it asked for my zip code only to be told it was invalid. I tried the whole process again. No luck. I was already 10 minutes late for my doctor's appointment and so I just left my car in the spot. At home, I registered (I had taken a picture of the meter with my phone) and told them what had happened. Hopefully it will be resolved. But there are several things that were not thought through at all. (1) Not everyone has a smart phone (2) Those of us with smart phones may not be so eager to register for a parking service with company we know nothing about. (3) What about older people who will never be able to muddle through this awkward process. (4) Not everyone has a phone with them all the time. (5) It already takes 10 - 15 minutes to find a parking space. Add another 15 minutes to pay for your parking spot. After this, I will see my doctor in his office in Bernardsville just to avoid this absurd inconvenience. Summit used to be a fun place to go out to eat and shop. There are too many other towns that seem happy to have me there...
