The Bar Method Attracts Celebrity Clients

Two best friends, moms started fitness studio.

Drew Barrymore, Denise Richards and Lisa Rina have one thing in common: they love The Bar Method. And, no, I don’t mean they all drink at the same bar in L.A.  I am referring to an hour-long workout set to the latest tunes that will have your legs feeling like jelly before the hour is over. It’s unlike any workout you have ever experienced.

Jen Hedrick, 37, and Angie Comiteau, 38, are two best friends and Summit moms who brought The Bar Method to Summit. Located on the second floor at 86 Summit Avenue, the spacious studio is filled with clients from all over New Jersey who make the trek to Summit. The two were inspired to open the studio shortly after they met at a Music Together class years ago.

“We often talked about how we couldn't lose our baby weight and tried everything. Jen often talked about The Bar Method, which she did in San Francisco and missed desperately,” said Comiteau.

Hedrick convinced her friend to hop on a plane to experience a class in San Francisco. It was love at first sweat for Comiteau.

“We spoke with the owner, Burr Leonard, who agreed to let us open the first studio outside the Bay Area. Burr trained us and we practiced on friends for over a year in a makeshift studio in Jen's attic with our four original teachers—Melissa, Gina, Stacey & Lisa,” she said.

What exactly is the Method? Comiteau describes it as “a revolutionary workout that quickly and safely reshapes your entire body through a series of strength training and stretching exercises." Results: long, firm thighs; lifted seat, and flat abs.

The Method uses props such as a Ballet Bar to target a women’s hard-to-reach spots.  At first, the moves seem very simple and easy.  However, after countless repetitions, every muscle is screaming for mercy.  You swear to yourself that this will be your last class but you find yourself back in class a day or two later.

Just ask any of The Bar Method’s clients. Ever since the Summit studio opened in January 2008, the classes have been filled to the max. In order to attend class, it’s recommended that you make a reservation in advance. Regulars know that in order to get in their desired class, you have to sign up and do it fast.

However, Comiteau revealed that the studio has plans to expand and double their space in 2010, so getting into a class will be that much easier.

Donica Cook was one of the first Summit Bar Method clients. Cook, a mom of four who lives in Chatham, is a walking testimony that The Bar Method works. In 18 months, she transformed her body from a size 10 to a size 2. She has nothing but praise for the program.

“Finally, I'm happy about my body," Cook said. "I am healthier, more confident and honestly proud of myself for discovering The Bar Method and more importantly sticking with it, especially given my hectic schedule."
