Changing times and lack of convenient parking for customers are some of the main reasons the printing and designing franchise branch will be moving to New Providence.
Alpha Graphics, the design and printing franchise branch which has been in Summit since 1989, will be moving its business to New Providence next month. Owner, Michael Tan said the rent was too high and customers often would have difficulty finding convenient parking nearby. "I was surprised how important it was for our customers to find parking," Tan said. "I've had some customers get frustrated looking for a place to park and just leave." He said typically, customers will come to the store to pick up large quantities of boxes and parking several blocks away or more can be very inconvenient. "We're moving to a light industrial park in New Providence where parking is free and the rent is significantly less," Tan added. Tan, who has been …

Store front covered in brown paper. Store moving to Route 22 in Union.
Lanel Jewelry & Antiques has closed its Summit location. Nanette Kryston, chair of Summit Downtown Inc., confirmed the local jewelry store closed its door as of March 1. "It's gone for good," she said. The owners, she said, are moving to a new location on Route 22 in Union. "It was a glorified pawn shop," Kryston said. As of now, the SDI chair said it is unknown what might replace Lanel on the corner of Springfield Avenue and Maple Street. Lanel was the victim of a robbery in mid-August 2009 when an armed gunman reportedly robbed the store in broad daylight. It is still unknown what was stolen from the store but the owner was reportedly locked in the bathroom during the robbery. According to Police Chief Robert Lucid, no suspect was ever …

Five Summit investors restore a Victorian-era mansion with a history that's over 100 years old.
Summit residents know that their city is celebrated for its one-of-a-kind shops, Zagat-rated restaurants, and renowned businesses. And as of last month, "executive inn boutique" can also be added to that list. Last month, the DeBary Inn officially re-opened for business on Springfield Avenue, welcoming a diverse group of clientele and perpetuating a history that began in the late 1800s. The inn was purchased in September 2009 by five Summit partners who included one of the city's most recognizable citizens, TV personality Jim Cramer of CNBC's Mad Money. In fact, Cramer discussed the recent acquisition with Martha Stewart during a Nov. 9 appearance on The Martha Stewart Show: "(I) bought an inn," Cramer said. "It was one of those things …

Council approves the lease of 2 Walnut St. to the Summit YMCA.
City Council approved the lease of 2 Walnut St. to the YMCA for $1 per year Tuesday night. The building will continue to be used as a youth center. "It's a way for us to keep the youth services going," said Councilwoman Ellen Dickson. The ordinance allowed for a two-year long lease, and the city will be responsible for utilities and outside property maintenance, an estimated $20,000 cost. The Summit YMCA will be in charge of every day maintenance as well as scheduling youth services for the city. While the ordinance passed unanimously and without public comment, there was some discussion between council members about presenting the building for sale. "In the past we've come close to declaring it for sale," said Councilman Tom Getzendanner…

Coffee bar also serves smoothies and healthy snacks.
Cafe Mavi has opened a new location inside the Summit YMCA. Erol Zeren, one of the stores owners, said the cafe aims to serve healthy food, so opening a branch inside the YMCA just made sense. "Our goal is to serve healthy food to people," Zeren said. "We our helthy food and moved it over there." The small bar to the left of the lobby serves all the usual coffee drinks, from espressi and macchiatos, to soups, salads and wraps. Zeren said they've also added protein smoothies and shakes and low-fat granola and vegetables "quick bites." The partnership, Zeren said, was initiated from both sides. Zeren ahd his family are members at the Y and both parties wanted to make something work. "If we can't reach people at the train station or here at …

Summit resident makes a variety of accessories including belts scarves and jewelry.
When you first walk in to Nancy OBrien's Summit accessories studio, you are captivated by the explosion of patterns and color. OBrien is owner of Magpie Designs, a jewelry and accessories line that she started several years ago with only one belt. OBrien explains that she had a summer belt that she loved but couldn't wear in the fall. Her husband, OB, picked fabric for a new belt, a fall-colored monkey print which she made into a great new belt. After that, she and her daughter Bridget, who was then in fifth grade, started selecting fabrics and making them for gifts. That was the beginning of Magpie Designs. "Also at that time I was doing a lot of traveling to Europe as a flight attendant for Continental Airlines," Obrien said. "On every …
