Summit Public Art Goes International!
Summit Public Art proudly welcomes a new set of sculptures to its retinue of art, a trio of pieces called Envols by Parisian sculptor Pascale Fournier.
Born in the US but raised in France, Pascale has studied set and costume design as well as fine arts, working with renowned directors and playwrights in places like l’Opéra de Paris and la Comédie Français. She also did her own work as a painter and sculptor and, beginning in the 1990’s, has devoted herself entirely to her art, defining herself today through her sculptures. She enjoys working with clay, fire and resin, and her work has been shown in France and abroad…and now in Summit! Envols is located on the Village Green near Maple Street.
The Envols series is part of the artist’s reflection on the multiplicity and complexity of the human character. Her majestic and colorful sculptures are meant to interact with each other and with the public, recreating a theater-like experience. With their soft shapes and vibrant colors, Envols speak poetry and dreams, reflecting on the human condition and how we are constantly torn between the mundane and our aspiration for greatness. Visit Pascale’s website at www.pascalefournier.com to learn more.
Today there are more than 15 sculptures displayed on the Village Green and at other sites around the city, including a new kinetic piece at City Hall. Over the past ten years, more than 35 works of art have rotated through Summit, where they have been installed at various sites for 6 months or more. There are also three permanent installations – the art glass windows in the bus shelters along Broad Street. A new permanent “gateway” sculpture will be installed soon in East Summit on Broad Street.
Summit Public Art, established in 2002, is an all-volunteer committee and is funded solely through private donations and grants; no funding is provided by the City of Summit. Contributions ensure that new and powerful public art continues to bring vibrancy to the Summit community. More About Village Green
The village green anchors downtown Summit with its close proximity to the Summit Free Public Library, YMCA, train station and downtown stores and restaurants. The park has plenty of benches for people-watching and trees for shade from the sun. There are also war memorials dedicated to local veterans, and the green is periodically home to public art displays.
