Summit Event Aims to Find a Bone Marrow Match for Five-Year-Old with Rare Blood Disorder
The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad will be hosting a bone marrow drive on Sunday, July 15, 2012, from Noon – 4:00 p.m. The drive is being held on behalf of a 5-year-old boy named Jake, who is the nephew of two long-time EMTs on the Summit Squad.
In February, Jake was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia, a rare blood disorder which causes bone marrow failure. He is desperately in need of a bone marrow match, his best hope for a cure. His family has already been checked, as have the worldwide bone marrow banks, but so far no match has been found.
Come out to the event and help spread the word. Testing to see if you are a bone marrow match is quick and painless – it is done with a simple cheek swab.
The event will be held at:
- The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad
- 50 Elm St., Summit, NJ 07901
- *Please park in the Middle School parking lot
If you can't attend the Summit event, or are unable to be a bone marrow donor due to a medical condition, please consider making a donation at http://www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/matchjake.
Also, come out to lunch or dinner at McLynn’s Restaurant at 250 Morris Ave in Springfield on Sunday, July 8. The restaurant will donate a portion of your bill to the cause if you let them know that you are there to support Jake.
To learn more about Jake, you can view a recent Good Morning America segment (aired Tuesday, June 26) http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/bone-marrow-donor-16651020
