Council to Discuss More than $2.8M in Bond and Capital Ordinances

The ordinances, to be introduced at Summit's Council meeting tonight, include $1.618 million for capital improvements and the rest for other improvement projects.

The introduction of a $1.618 milion capital ordinance tops Summit's council agenda meeting, set for Tuesday night at 7:30 pm. The expenditure for 'various capital improvements' is but one of several such ordinances on the council's agenda totaling more than $2.8 million. Other ordinances slated for introduction include: An ordinance establishing 2013 salaries for city employees will also be introduced. Changes in some traffic and parking regulations will be set before the council as well. Those changes include two-hour parking on Dennis Place; no 'right on red' for vehicles turning at Clark Street and Springfield Avenue; and lane restrictions at Broad Street and Springfield Avenue.   The Summit council agenda can be found at this link.

Summit Attorney to Talk on Union County Topics Tonight

Summit attorney and former Union County Freeholder candidate Andrew Smith will address the League of Women Voters tonight at the New Providence Library.

Andrew Smith, a Summit resident, attorney, and former Republican candidate for the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, has a few things to say about how county government is run. He'll be talking about that and other topics tonight, May 20, at the New Providence Library, in a special series entitled "Union County - It's a Big Deal" that's being sponsored by the League of Women Voters (LWV). The forum will be held at the library's Conti Community Room at 7:30 pm. The building is located at 377 Elkwood Avenue. A question and answer session will follow the talk, which is open to the public. Database Provides Information on 31,000 Flood and Salvage-Titled Vehicles

The state urges customers to consult the database before buying a car

The State Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) are urging all customers to consult their database of flood and salvage-titled vehicles before purchasing a car. That database now provides information on 31,000 such vehicles, the State MVC announced on Wednesday. It isn't illegal to sell vehicles with flood or salvaged titles. However, there are specific requirements that ensure potential purchasers are aware of the status of such vehicles, according to the MVC. “Damage sustained by vehicles must be disclosed to prospective buyers,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. “We will hold car dealers accountable for violating our Consumer Fraud Act if they fail to make such disclosures.” The database was …

Goal Of New Assembly Bill is to 'Save Lives'

A bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy Muñoz of Summit will expedite transport of critically ill patients between health care facilities.

For decades, Assemblyman Dr. Eric Muñoz of Summit worked to save lives as a trauma surgeon at University Hospital in Newark. He worked with a sense of urgency to make sure that patients received treatment as quickly as possibly. Now, four years after his untimely death, his wife Nancy — who took over his Assembly seat, is continuing his mission in the form of a new legislative measure. Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Muñoz directing hospitals to establish protocols to request the immediate dispatch and timely transport of critically ill patients between health care facilities by specialty care transportation units, was approved on April 29 by the General Assembly recently. Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority Honored by the AEA-NJ for Super Storm Sandy Accomplishments

The Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority (RVSA) has been recognized by the Association of Environmental Authorities of New Jersey (AEA) and awarded for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments during Super Storm Sandy.  The RVSA was presented with awards for Mutual Aid and Individual Achievements at the Annual Wave Awards Luncheon held on March 13th during the AEA’s spring conference at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City. Summit Public Works Employees to Receive 1.5 Percent Salary Increase

The four-year agreement between the public works employees and City of Summit was approved at the April 2 common council meeting.

  The Summit Common Council approved a four-year agreement at the April 2 meeting to increase the salary of public works employees an average of 1.5 percent, according to TheAlternativePress. TheAlternativePress reported that the decision was unanimous to approve the agreement between the city and department of public works, which is represented by Local No. 469 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Also approved at the common council meeting was a one-year agreement with a forester not to exceed $36,000. The city approved a community forestry management plan that includes various policies on maintaining and removing trees as well as decorating trees with holiday lighting.  The agreement also includes Summit’s tree dedication …
