Jed Levy Quartet on May 17 in Summit

The Jed Levy Quartet, a New York based jazz group with an international reputation, will perform a concert at Christ Church in Summit, NJ on May 17 at 8 pm.

The group will be performing music from its new release on SteepleChase Music, "The Italian Suite", a ten movement original work by Mr. Levy, that contains musical portraits of people, places and things that made an impression on the composer while touring and performing in Italy.

This will be the first domestic performance of the entire suite, which was premiered in Italy at the Bari International Jazz Festival a few years ago.

The quartet, which consists of Alvester Garnett - drums, Misha Tsiganov - piano, Thomson Kneeland - bass and Mr. Levy - saxophone recorded "The Italian Suite" after returning from a month long tour of Central and South America for the US Department of State and Jazz at Lincoln Center. After their selection for this very competitive and prestigious "Jazz Ambassadorship" the group recorded the CD "Travelogue" with a grant from the State Department and gave out 500 copies as gifts to people who were excited by their music in Panama, Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela and Peru, the five countries they visited.

"The Italian Suite" is Mr.Levy's tenth CD as a leader and his tuneful compositions have been recorded by many other artists such as Eddie Henderson, The Headhunters, Ron McClure and Jack Walrath. As a sideman, his credits include Jaki Byard, Don Patterson, Chico O'Farrill, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Jack McDuff, The Temptations and Mike Clark/Charlie Hunter group. He is a native of Martinsville, NJ and is excited to be performing so close to where he grew up and is hoping to see some old friends at the event.

There will be a pre-concert talk/meet the artist at 7 pm and the performance will start at 8 pm at  Christ Church, 561 Springfield Ave, Summit, NJ 07901. Admission will be $20 for adults and $10 for students.  Tickets can be purchased online at christchurchsummit.org or at the door.
