LINCOLN TECHNICAL STUDENTS GET EXPERIENCE WHILE HELPING MORRIS HABITAT IN DOVER

Randolph, NJ:  Recently, students and teachers from Lincoln Technical Institute located in Mahwah, NJ came out to help on a Morris Habitat for Humanity build project.  One of the teachers, Al Moors, is also a regular volunteer for Morris Habitat.  While sharing some of his Morris Habitat experiences during class,, one of his Electrical System Technician students asked if they could all go to a construction site one day to get some hands-on experience.  These students are training to work with fire and burglar alarms, home automation and other specialties. The group of 42 worked hard and got to “run lots of wire” at the Spring Street project in Dover.   Al Moors summed up the experience, “It was a complete win-win situation.  The students were split into teams and given blueprints to study before they went to the site.   It was wonderful for the students to see what’s involved in wiring a house.  We’re hoping to continue this addition to the curriculum and also expand it to other areas in the future.” Partnerships such as these help Morris Habitat achieve its goal of building safe, affordable housing (mostly with volunteer labor), while giving the volunteers a meaningful experience.

The Spring Street project is a new duplex being built in collaboration with the Town of Dover. Each unit will have 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a garage. These 64th and 65th Morris Habitat homes will be ENERGY STAR certified for energy efficiency.  Funding for this project includes a Morris County Community Development HOME grant and sponsorships by New Jersey Natural Gas  and the Housing Partnership
