Obituary: Elwood C. Cornog, Jr., 87, Longtime Summit Resident

2013 Recipient of Summit Memorial Day Veteran's Achievement Award

Elwood C. Cornog, Jr., passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, February 24th. Mr. Cornog lived the majority of his 87 years in Summit. At the age of 18, just shy of graduating from high school, Mr. Cornog enlisted in the Army. Following his deployment to Germany as a tank gunner in WWII, Mr. Cornog earned his high school diploma, graduated from Lehigh University, began a decades-long career with Colgate-Palmolive, and married his  beloved wife of 59 years, Judith (nee McKinney), with whom he had attended Brayton Elementary School.

Mr. Cornog is known locally for his many years as the organizer and director of Summit’s Annual Memorial Day Observance. Mr. Cornog believed deeply in the importance of honoring all those who serve our country and worked tirelessly each year to shape a program that was meaningful and profound. In 2013, Mr. Cornog was himself honored when the City of Summit named him as the recipient of the first annual Summit Memorial Day Veteran’s Achievement Award.

Mr. Cornog leaves his wife Judith, their sons Elwood C. “Woody” and Frederick, and their wives Regina and Barbara respectively, and granddaughter Bridget.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8th, at 11:00am at the United Methodist Church of Summit on DeForest Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, 56 Elm Street, Summit, NJ 07901.
