Common Council Approves Complete Streets Resolution In Summit

Press release:

At its last meeting on June 3, the City of Summit Common Council adopted a Complete Streets policy. The resolution was introduced by Councilmember and Chair of the Public Works Committee, Sandra Lizza, and was developed with input from City engineer Aaron Schrager and members of the Environmental Commission.

While the City has incorporated Complete Streets design principles into its planning over the past several years, adoption of the resolution formalizes these standards and creates an opportunity for the City to benefit from NJ Department of Transportation grant money available to municipalities who have implemented Complete Streets policies.

“Complete Streets recognizes that roadways need to consider multi-modal opportunities as part of a complete transportation system, not as just amenities,” explains Lizza. “An increase in pedestrian accessibility will not only make our streets more complete, but will also help to promote foot traffic in the business district. Every trip begins and ends with someone walking.”

The City of Summit defines Complete Streets as: a transportation policy and design approach that requires streets to be planned, designed, operated, and maintained to enable safe, convenient and comfortable travel and access for users of all ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation.

“This policy will ensure that all users of roadways are routinely considered in transportation projects and provided with safe and convenient transportation options,” explains Lizza. “While we work towards bicycling and pedestrian safety and education in our community, it is equally important to have supportive infrastructure that encourages this behavior.
