Interweave in Summit Announces Two Events in February

Interweave is an interfaith community learning center in Summit. Explore crucial global issues or immerse yourself in the story of the universe by registering to participate in these events.

Interweave, an interfaith community learning center in Summit, is pleased to announce the following events this February:

1. Explore crucial global issues at Great Decisions 2013
: Engaged Citizens Learning About the World. Co-sponsored by Interweave, Calvary Church, and the League of Women Voters of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit, use Great Decisions’ thought-provoking non-partisan study guide to explore the following areas of focus: Future of the Euro, Egypt, NATO, Myanmar and Southeast Asia, Humanitarian Intervention, Iran, China in Africa and Threat Assessment.

Each session, led by a moderator, enables participants to make their views known to our national foreign policy makers through opinion ballots. This is the centerpiece of the longest running civic education program in the U. S. devoted to foreign affairs. Sign up for individual topics or, better yet, the whole series.

The class meets for eight Wednesdays at Interweave’s Summit Center in Calvary Church’s Parish Office, located at 31 Woodland Ave. in Summit, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The dates are Feb. 13, 20, 27, Mar. 6, 13, 17, 20, 27, and Apr. 3. Tuition costs $95 for the general public, $85 for members of co-sponsoring groups, and $20 per drop-in session, plus the cost of the course manual ($20).

2. Immerse yourself in the story of the universe as inspired by the work of Thomas Berry, Brian Swimme, Maria Montessori, Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Grim, Joseph Campbell and others in Deep Cosmology: Follow-up sessions to the film Journey of the Universe with award-winning author, educator, lecturer, storyteller and retreat leader Jennifer Morgan.

Through storytelling, lecture, discussion, meditation, and a lot of fun, delve into a deep time framework of a self organizing, emergent universe. For non-scientists, explore the most important scientific concepts, from the Big Bang to evolution of humans.  For those with a strong science background, connect the dots in profound, new and exciting ways. Transcend self and shift your relationship to nature, the earth, and the universe. Through a deep understanding of evolution, discover a powerful framework for addressing pressing environmental issues of our day.

This class meets for three Sundays: Feb. 17, 24, Mar. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. Week 1 covers The Cosmic Story and Thomas Berry’s Twelve Principles; Week 2 covers Meaning, Belonging, Identity and the Governing Themes; and Week 3 covers Reinventing Ourselves and Our Institutions.

Tuition for this course is $90 ($85 members) and pre-registration required by Feb. 15 at noon. The course will meet at at Interweave’s Summit Center in Calvary Church’s Parish Office, located at 31 Woodland Ave. in Summit, NJ.
