SUMMIT, N.J., June 23, 2014 – The State of New Jersey has issued an amended motor vehicles law that targets the use of wireless telephones and electronic communications effective July 1, 2014.
This amended law does not allow for the use of any hands-held device in a motor vehicle even while stopped in traffic or at a traffic signal. The Summit Police Department will be strongly enforcing the amended law and encourages members of the community to abide by it.
The amended law outlines increased penalties and progressive fines for multiple offenses. The fine for a first offense will increase from 100 to 200 dollars. A second offense will be 400 dollars and three or more offenses will result in a 600 dollar fine. For third or subsequent violations, it is in the discretion of the court to determine if the person will forfeit the right to operate a motor vehicle for a period of 90 days.
In addition, a person convicted of a third or subsequent violation shall be assessed three motor vehicle penalty points. “Texting and driving is a serious safety concern,” explains Lt. David L. Richel. “Summit Police will be out there looking to enforce this new law and help
