SAGE Eldercare was recently awarded an Accreditation with Distinction for 2012 by the Commission on Accreditation for Home Care (CAHC). Since 1986, CAHC has been protecting the interests of home care consumers and supporting quality home care agencies.
“Certified home health aides enable older adults to remain living with the comforts and familiarity of their own home,” stated Jessica Rosenzweig Gruber, Executive Director of SAGE Eldercare. “We are proud that SAGE’s HomeCare service is viewed as top-notch. The department has been accredited with distinction for the second year in a row, and we are honored that the aides and nurses have been recognized in this manner as they continue to represent SAGE’s tradition of serving older adults with integrity and compassion.”
Each of the 175 home care agencies that CAHC accredits each year has to be monitored on an ongoing basis, must meet their performance standards, and each employee of the agency is screened. Each CAHC accredited agency, such as SAGE, has voluntarily chosen to follow above-average standards based on established practices in the home care field.
CAHC sent an experienced RN Field Nurse Surveyor to monitor compliance and ensure that SAGE HomeCare has met the following standards:
- Only currently certified home health aides are employed, which requires that they each have successfully completed a 76-hour certification training program approved by the NJ Board of Nursing and that criminal background checks are conducted by the Board of Nursing prior to certification.
- All home health aides have passed competency tests and attended in-service education programs every year; every two months, a registered professional nurse goes to the home to supervise the certified home health aide and monitor the continuing appropriateness of the plan of care.
- SAGE takes care of insurance requirements and applicable taxes for the home health aides and nurses (if you hire someone privately, you are responsible for these fees).
- SAGE has a set of established policies to guide their operation, including the handling of any issues that a patient or patient’s family might have.
“SAGE is accredited with distinction for personal care services, which includes personal care, bathing, grocery shopping, meal planning and preparation, toileting, transfers and ambulation, assistance with therapeutic or exercise regimes, laundry and changing bed linens, light housekeeping, and respite care,” noted Ellisa Lee, RN, Director of HomeCare. “We have 61 home care aides who are employed through our service and they care for 119 clients on an hourly or live-in basis who reside in parts of Union, Morris, Essex and Somerset Counties.”
SAGE Eldercare supports the independence, well-being and quality of life of older adults, their families and caregivers, through the provision of client-centered health, social and support services. Founded in 1954, SAGE is one of the few non-profit eldercare agencies in the United States, and the oldest in New Jersey, that offers a broad and comprehensive array of services under one roof that assist elderly, often frail, adults to remain independent in their own homes.
Programs at SAGE Eldercare include: HomeCare; Meals On Wheels; Spend-A-Day Adult Day Health Center; GPS (Guidance Planning Support) Services; InfoCare free information and referral service; Fall Prevention Initiative; Home Repair Service; Grocery Shopping and Errand Service; Bill Paying Service; Holistic Living Services; Alzheimer’s and PREP caregiver support groups; Community Education; and Union County Medicare SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). In addition, SAGE has operated a Furniture Restoration Workshop, run by volunteers who specialize in caning and rushing chairs and refinishing furniture, and a Resale Shop for more than 50 years. Both provide essential funding that supports the organization’s programs and services for seniors in the community.
SAGE Eldercare serves over 6,000 people throughout Union, Essex, Morris and Somerset Counties, as well as across the United States. For more information, call 908.273.5550 or visit www.sageeldercare.org.
