St. John's Lutheran Church Calls New Pastor

Pastor Moore has had a distinguished career, most recently serving as the dean of religious and spiritual life at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

The following was submitted by St. John’s Lutheran Church:

The members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit, NJ have formally called the Rev. Gladys G. Moore to serve as the church’s new pastor. Rev. Moore was recommended by the congregational council and confirmed by a near-unanimous vote by the congregation. She has led the congregation as interim pastor since April of this year.

Pastor Moore has had a distinguished career, most recently serving as the dean of religious and spiritual life at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Before that, she was an assistant to the bishop of the New Jersey Synod, ELCA.  During her tenure as part of the Bishop’s staff, Pastor Moore also served as pastor to two congregations, St. Matthew’s in Jersey City and St. John’s in Newark.

“We are very excited to welcome Reverend Moore as our pastor,” said Lee Ann Miller, St. John’s congregational council president. “She has impressed us with her leadership skills, her passion for ministry and her vision and commitment to social ministry.”

One area in particular where St. John’s will look to Rev. Moore for her leadership is in social ministry. St. John’s has a history of involvement in the local community, raising donations for local food banks, as well as larger initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity and the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

Miller continued, “Rev. Moore has such a rich history of working in different settings. We are confident that she will help us create a strong relationship with the community.”

Rev. Moore will officially be installed as pastor of St. John’s at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12th at a festive service of Holy Communion. St. John’s is located at 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. Services are held at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. Visitors are welcome.
