'Tricky Demolition' Requires Brick-by-Brick Teardown on Springfield Avenue

Springfield Avenue entrance of Tier Garage is expected to be open in time for holiday shopping season.

Following NJ Transit's approval, two additional buildings in the rear of the property at 466-467 Springfield Ave. are being taken down, in some places, brick-by-brick, Summit City Administrator Chris Cotter explained.

Because the buildings are so close to the railroad, additional safety measures are required, Cotter said. Precautions are being taken to avoid anything falling on tracks and switches have been covered.

Demolition at the site, including the building that formerly housed Bagel Chateau, began in October after the Summit City Council approved plans presented by Mark Yeager of MRY Associates for a 35,000-square-foot building that will offer both retail and office space.

"It's a tricky demolition," Cotter said. "But the new building will be an enormous benefit to this part of downtown. It's been a longtime coming."

At the time plans were approved for the new building, which is expected to be complete by 2015, Yeager told the Council that both entrances to the Tier Garage would be open in time for the holiday shopping season. Fences will be re-erected in January and come down again in time for 2014's holiday season.
