Photographs by Nancy Beckerman

The Summit Free Public Library and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey announce an exhibition of photography by Nancy Beckerman in THE GALLERY at the Summit Free Public Library, April 1 through May 31, 2011.

Reflections on Hong Kong: Geometrics and Life, is a series of photographs by Nancy Beckerman. This series combines the angular forms of Hong Kong’s urban landscape and the casual interactions of everyday life. The artist explains:

In many ways my development as a photographer has paralleled my work as a psychotherapist for over thirty years. As I view the world and the people with whom I work, I’m always paying attention to what lies beneath the surface. My goal is to reflect the images I see back to the viewer as though holding up a mirror. In this way I hope to add dimension to the photographic image, and to support the people I work with in developing a deeper understanding and knowledge of themselves.

Many of the photographic images in this project were created by a decision to look ‘up’ as opposed to accepting that which is visible at eye level, and sometimes to look ‘down’ creating a totally different perspective. One can learn from this technique that beauty presents itself in many forms and can be viewed and appreciated at various angles.

Nancy began her studies in photography with Dennis Simonetti, Master Photographer Instructor at the New School for Social Research and she continues to meet with his critique group. Rameshwar Das, writer and photographer of Long Island, New York, taught Nancy about environmental photography. Her focus on landscape may be credited to Kathryn Szoka, commercial and fine art photographer from Sag Harbor, New York. She currently studies with Don Polzo, Digital Media Coordinator and Instructor, at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey.
