Summit Celebrates Art Party

Celebrate with Summit Public Art!

The Summit community is invited to celebrate the visual arts on Thursday, June 14, when the Mayor’s Partnership for Summit Arts, known as Summit Public Art, holds its annual Celebrate Art Party. Set for 6:30 PM at a lovely home on Whittredge Road in Summit, the party will be hosted by the Summit Public Art Committee and Catie and Robert Totman.

Honorees at this year’s event are Robert Kaplow, author, scriptwriter and Summit High  School English teacher, and Marion Grzesiak, Executive Director of the Visual Arts Center of NJ. Both will be recognized for their contributions to the vitality of the arts in Summit.

Also in attendance will be several of the artists whose works currently are installed in Summit, at various sites around town. Howard Kalish, David Henderson, Ava Blitz, Meryl Taradash, and Jason Krugman will bring additional artwork with them, which can be purchased as well as enjoyed at the party. Pascale Fournier, a well-known Parisian sculptor, will have several pieces at the party, and two new pieces will be displayed at the event. Several sculptures that are currently installed around the city will be brought to the party as well.

Currently, there are more than 15 sculptures displayed on the Village Green and at other sites around the city. Over the past ten years, more than 30 works of art have rotated through Summit, where they have been installed at various sites for 6 months or more. There are also three permanent installations – the art glass windows in the bus shelters along Broad Street. A new permanent “gateway” sculpture will be installed this fall in East Summit on Broad Street.

Summit Public Art, established in 2002, is an all-volunteer committee and is funded solely through private donations and grants; no funding is provided by the City of Summit. Contributions ensure that new and powerful public art continues to bring vibrancy to the Summit community.
