Happy Read Across America Day!

Plus: First grade registration begins today for the Summit Public Schools.

Here are five things you need to know today, March 2, 2011:

  1. The Summit High School Performing Arts Department will present the Tony Award winning musical, , tonight at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for adults.
  2. It's National Read Across America Day! is hosting their annual Read Across America event.  Guest readers, crafts, games and much more are part of this event.  This fun time will be held at the Springfield store, 240 Route 22 West on Wednesday, March 2, 2001 at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, please call 973-376-8544.  In case of inclement weather, Read Across America will take place on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 5:30 p.m.
  3. Registration for first grade will be held on March 2, 3, and 4 for children of Summit residents whose sixth birthday falls on or before October 1, 2011. Registration will take place at the Summit elementary school the children will attend. If a parent is not sure in which elementary school neighborhood they reside, they may find out by calling the Summit Board of Education at 908-918- 2100, x3102.   Appointments are necessary for registration and can be made by calling the schools:  Brayton School, (908) 273-1276; Franklin School, (908) 277-2613; Jefferson School, (908) 273-3807; Lincoln-Hubbard School, (908) 273-1333; Washington School, (908) 273-0817.   Registration forms can be found on the Summit Public Schools website, www.summit.k12.nj.us. All completed registration forms must be submitted at the time of registration except for the medical forms, which must be completed and submitted to the schools by June 1, 2011. However, parents may submit the medical forms at registration if they are completed by that time. Also required at the time of registration are:   • The child's official birth certificate with raised seal. (Passport is acceptable if birth certificate is not available.)   • Four proofs of Summit residency. (Acceptable proofs of residency are listed on page 2 of the Preliminary Information sheet included in the registration packet.)
  4. As a part of Spirit Week at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School, (February 28 to March 4), the school will hold its second annual school-wide book drive in support of the NEA's Read Across America, which will be celebrated across the nation on March 2. All of the books collected during the drive will be donated to a K-5 elementary school in Jersey City, but donations of books for middle school aged students are also welcome. Donations of new or used books will be accepted, and they may be dropped off in the collection boxes that are in the concourse of the school. 
  5. The Summit Police Department is in need of more school crossing guards. Most guards work two shifts per day from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., school days, Monday through Friday.School crossing guards are paid $40.33 per day. An incentive bonus of three full days pay is given to those with a perfect attendance record for the school year. Should the schools declare a snow day, crossing guards will be paid for these days, provided they work the day before and the day after the snow day.The Summit Police Department provides uniforms and training. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide their own transportation to the crossing posts.
