'Jersey Shore:' What is Show's Lasting Impact on NJ?

Did MTV's raucous reality show change national perceptions of the Garden State?

MTV's Jersey Shore may soon be history, but will images of drunken misbehavior, boardwalk brawls and ample helpings of "gym, tan, laundry" characterize the Garden State for years to come?

On Thursday, MTV announced the show after its sixth season, taped this summer in Seaside Heights, airs this fall.

But what is the lasting impact of the TV series that many say put the worst of the state's stereotypes on display for millions of viewers across the world?

Were the antics of the eight housemates on Ocean Terrace just a few young people having fun, or has it done permanent damage to the state's reputation?

I'm with you! For goodness sakes why is everyone making such a big deal about this crazy show? Who cares? Get a life and forget about it is right!!! My gosh, who cares what anyone thinks about NJ? Let them stay the hell away if they have a problem. I live here and I'm fine with it. It is a wonderful State and I will be damned if I let a bunch of immature little brats change how I feel. They are funny and the show is just put on for them to make millions which they did. It is television and that is how television is. You people should all get a life so you don't have to think about this crap so much!!!

"...who cares what anyone thinks about NJ? Let them stay the hell away if they have a problem." Tourism earns millions for NJ annually, but the Bennie Brats and Bimbos on TV attract the wrong kind of people -- trouble-makers and gang-bangers. Families aren't going to vacation at the Shore because NJ is perceived nationwide as Sleazeside. At least the new "Jersey Made" show's lawyer has a brain.

Funny thing now is some of them have made millions. So, a few of those dopes can afford to buy a home in Spring Lake and have fun there. Hey, maybe Jaywow Farley would be the first, being Irish and all, she has made tons of money and be the first?

Ref, Do you believe that your opinion is the only one that matters? Were you bullied as a child and this forum gives you a placeto be powerful in your own mind?.

My wife and I traveled across the southwestern, northwestern, and great plains states for our business in the '80's and 90's. Even back then, we would get the inevitable Jersey wisecracks: "Your from Joisey? What eggzit?," "Why would you want to live THERE?," "Do you know any mafia people?"--That kind of stuff. I would patiently explain to them the incredible diversity of our state and how where we were from, was more about farms, cows, and horses than it was about urban stereotypes. Rod Serling used to introduce The Twilight Zone with: "You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind." The creators of Jersey Shore have created a fictional realm which in this perverse “opposite world” has become a perceived reality by many. Good riddance to it.

OH. Thank.God. What a hideous representation of our lovely State. The problem is they will probably manufacture another "Jersey......" show because they really get good ratings. People like train wrecks.

After watching The Sopranos, Jersey Shore, Mob Wives, etc, I assumed you guys from Jersey all talk funny and kill people. Is this not true? Don't disappoint me.

Don't forget Buddy "The Cake Boss"
We eat, we drink, we make people offers they can't refuse ... But, we don't pump our own gas!!!
M.A.Dawson September 4, 2012 at 01:56 am
I haven't seen that one. Do you guys bake cakes with nasty women or something? One thing I can say for sure, those Jersey shows have some of the worst actors I've ever seen. I assumed that's just the way people are their.

Oh no! Just take a moment and take a gander at a new reality show call " Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo" . So do all people from down South talk funny, have no brains, are fat , lazy , stupid , real ugly and collect toilet paper for a hobby?
Hank September 4, 2012 at 02:31 am
take a gander?

Well some people are really stupid in other states. We were visiting friends in Mississippi last month. We were asked more then once if all of NJ looked like Newark. My retort was does all of Mississippi look like the slums of Jackson MS?
M.A.Dawson September 4, 2012 at 02:36 am
That's what I heard. I'm from Seattle and we figure the only difference between you guys and the hicks is your accent. : )
M.A.Dawson September 4, 2012 at 02:37 am
Good one. I'll bet they do.

Nope, I am a native Jersey Shore person. My family has lived here for generations. We spent /spend most of our free time fishing, sailing and boating and some of us hunt once in awhile. My great grandparents worked in a cranberry bog. No way, no how are any of those morons from here or act like those of us that were born and raised here. However I would like to take them for a tour of my backyard the Pine Barrens and get them lost.

I really think the notion of this show causing us to look bad to other Americans is a bit blown out of proportion--I've been treated fine by others in the three years this has been on.

Jobs? They are all millionaires from this garbage. They will never need to work again.

Chardel, (what the hell is that name by the way) there is no need to play therapist and be an asshole. Especially when ref is right, NJ is NJ, who cares what people think? We know there is more to it than factories and shore trash, and you should too.

We should be able to sue for defamation of character! Those idiots were not even from here. This type of 'reality' programing is a disgrace to every American not just New Jersey people.
Ron Mullen September 8, 2012 at 02:49 pm
The Jersey Shore? Where is that? Thosands of Jerseyans have long ago been taking their summer vacations on NorthCarolina , Cape Cod , and various other outer island beaches. The Jersey shore became Suburbia many years ago.
Mac September 9, 2012 at 01:55 am
The saddest reality of reality programming are viewers who actually believe reality shows are reality.
Frazure September 9, 2012 at 11:08 am
Ut oh.....Kooka......just sayin'.

The Jersey shore has been getting worse for years. I was down in Wildwood this summer with my little kids and once it got dark I felt like i was taking my life into my hands. Same goes for Seaside. Point Pleasant is still ok, but it has gotten worse as well...plus the prices are rediculous...for a couple hundred bucks more for the week you can go to Disney.
