Schools Are Open, Drive Safely, Police Warn

Parents or guardians who drive students to school are reminded not to drop off children on the opposite side of the street without a crossing guard.

The Summit Police Department is asking for the community's support in getting the 2013-2014 school year off to a safe start as public and private schools open Wednesday.

Police officers will be visible at schools Wednesday and ask that parents talk with children about safety measures such as crossing streets only at crosswalks with traffic lights or crossing guards and being aware of their surroundings while walking to and from school.

Parents or guardians who drive students to school are reminded not to drop off children on the opposite side of the school, requiring them to cross the street without a crossing guard.

All areas that are not designated as parking or "drop off "areas should not be utilized for students' safety.
