Summit Man Drowned In Delaware River, Officials Confirm

Gary West was tubing with his daughter a week ago when he went missing.

body recovered from the Delaware River in Hunterdon County Tuesday was that of a Summit man who has been missing for nearly a week, a New Jersey State Police spokesman confirmed Friday evening.

Gary West, 38, was reported missing after he and his 14-year-old daughter went tubing along the Delaware Saturday and their inner-tube overturned. West’s daughter managed to float to the Pennsylvania side near Knowlton Township.

Three days later, a body matching West’s description was found in Frenchtown, about 35 miles from where West went into the water.

Authorities were unable to positively identify the body until Friday. State Police Sgt. Brian Polite said the Hunterdon County Medical Examiner used dental records to confirm West’s identity.

The medical examiner determined West died due to accidental drowning, Polite also said.
