Halloween Costumes for Kids

Downtown stores offer sales and options.

Still searching for the kiddo’s Halloween costume? Last-minute shoppers will find sale prices and lots of options in downtown Summit.

The Junior League Thrift Shop, 37 DeForest Ave.  - It’s hard to find a better deal: all Halloween costumes are on sale for just $1 each this week. Pickings are slimmer than at the start of October, when the store first puts out its costume rack, said assistant manager Joanne Zuna. But on Tuesday there were still a bunch of costumes for a range of ages, from infants to grade-schoolers. Among them: a pumpkin suit, a gauzy skirt and fairy wings, a cheerleading outfit, a cow costume, and a Dr. Seuss hat. For those still decorating their doors, plastic pumpkins, orange candles, and other Halloween-y items are 50 percent off.

CVS/Pharmacy, 29 DeForest Ave. – Here you can find costumes for the whole family, from adults and kids to the cat and dog. For the grown-ups, there are vampire capes, creepy masks, and orange prison jumpsuits, with some smaller versions for the little ones. There’s a range of devil’s horns for pets and people, and accessories like pirate’s swords, princess crowns and fairy wands. And there’s also a large makeup section – think clown face, fake blood, fake eyelashes. The Halloween aisle is stocked with plastic pumpkins, black and orange tinsel, and of course, candy. Halloween costumes are marked down 25 percent.

The Toy Professor, 430 Springfield Ave. – Classic dress-up clothes are for sale year-round at this children’s toy store, so the costume you buy here can have a life long after Halloween. “The quality of the clothes I sell is so much nicer than at the Halloween stores,” said owner Geoff Stern. Princess and fairy dresses, police and fire uniforms, knight and magician garb, doctor and chef clothes are on sale for about $30 each.

Zoom, 358 Springfield Ave., The store stopped selling Halloween costumes several years ago, but a few are still in stock, said employee Judy Goldman. The selection includes a Peter Pan outfit and a fairy dress. All are on sale for half price or less, Goldman said.
