'Nearly New' Shop for Athletes and Dancers Comes to Nearby New Providence

Flip Consignment offers quality used sporting and dance equipment at a fraction of the price of new.

A new concept in buying used merchandise has come to the area. Flip Consignment, now open at 1279 Springfield Ave. in New Providence, specializes in nearly-new shopping for people involved in dance and sports.

The shop, owned by Stefanie Mathews, offers quality used sports and dance equipment at what Mathews calls "phenomenal price" to people in and around New Providence, Summit, Berkeley Heights and Chatham. Flip Consignment will also have new, never-before-used merchandise for sale.

“There has been overwhelming interest and support for this concept in our community,” said Mathews, a Chatham resident and the mother of two sons. “Kids today are involved in so many sports and extra-curricular activities
and they grow so quickly that it just makes sense to recycle quality gear and equipment.”

The consignment concept in general has been taking off in recent years, with many people interested in converting quality used items into cash, or alternatively using the proceeds to fund upgrades.

“This especially makes sense for sports and dance,” said Mathews, “where gear can be very costly and kids might use it for only a season or two before outgrowing it.”

Thursday is Flip Consignment’s first official day of business, and Mathews said its shelves are well stocked with a wide array of items for dancing and for sports including lacrosse, soccer, golf, baseball, and basketball.
