Red Balloon Celebrates New Ownership With Daylong Event

Face painting, sales and, of course, red balloons, will all be part of Red Balloon Day Saturday.

After Manhattan-based fashion designer Nicole Kavanagh had her first child, she decided to try her hand on the other side of the business in a space a bit closer to home.

The Watchung resident took over ownership of The Red Balloon, located at 350 Springfield Avenue in Summit, in February. While she wanted to have a grand re-opening at the time, the weather didn't cooperate so Kavanagh has decided to combine the celebration with a back-to-fall, back-to school-event Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the children's boutique will host the family-friendly 'Red Balloon Day,' featuring face painting, sales, promotions and, of course, red balloons.

"It should be a really fun event for the community," said Kavanagh, who added that she has been enjoying meeting customers and their families since taking over the business which opened in town over 25 years ago. "It's a great location and I love being on the other side of what I used to do. Buying (the clothing) is fun."

A recent addition that has been a hit with customers is children's footwear.

"Everyone asks if we carry children's shoes and we do," she said. "So they can come and get their sneakers and back-to-school shoes."

The store also features a wide array of children's books, games and accessories.
