Spook-tacular Treats for Every Sweet Tooth

Summit bakeries and candy shops stock up on Halloween-themed sweets.

Halloween is known for one thing: sweets. Whether it’s trick-or-treat candy, Halloween party goodies, or just plain dessert, there is a multitude of options to choose from this year, and local businesses have certainly gotten into the spirit of the fright-fest season. Never before have Summit residents been tempted by such a spook-tacular array of edible ghosts, goblins, witches, and black cats currently lurking atop store shelves.

Natale’s Summit Bakery, a neighborhood institution for more than 70 years, has pulled out all the stops. In addition to the fresh-baked bread, pastries, and desserts that usually stock the shelves, the family-run business also features a mouth-watering assortment of ghoulish goodies for the young and the young-at-heart. Natale’s Halloween specialty items include fondant-iced sugar cookies shaped like ghosts, monsters, skeleton heads, and pumpkins, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes topped with spiders and black cats, as well as a decadent coffin-shaped skeleton cake, a creepy-crawly spider-shaped cake, and intricately designed petit-fours. For those who prefer sweets with a fall theme, Natale’s also sells an array of autumn leaf cookie platters, cakes, and cupcakes—all of which are baked on the premises and hand-decorated.

Sweet Nothings on Beechwood Road has also dedicated a significant amount of space to its Halloween offerings, which include bat-shaped cookies, chocolate “eyeballs,” pumpkin and tombstone lollipops, and chocolate spiders. The store offers a few nut-free treats to accommodate those with allergies, as well as a selection of Halloween themed party goods, making one-stop shopping easy for party planners.

Ricky’s Candy’s, Cones & Chaos, which some Summit kids refer to as “candy heaven,” is retailing a few extra items this holiday as well. Chocolate black cats, witches, and ghosts top the list, along with a fun, bobble-head witch candy dispenser, a ghost-shaped container filled with gum, and both white and milk chocolate molded lollipops. Candy corn and other fall themed treats can also be purchased by the pound.

All of these devilish delights and more are being well-received by children and also shoppers of all ages who have thrown caution to the wind, temporarily pushed aside diets, and can’t help but grin as they bite into each ghoulish treat. The countdown is on until October 31st when the streets will be lined with superheroes, princesses, animals, and a host of other costumed characters who will walk from house to house ringing doorbells and hoping for treats over tricks. But for now, in the days leading up to All Hallow’s Eve, Summit’s sweet tooth certainly has a lot of fun, sugar-coated wonders to indulge in.
