Summit's beloved restaurant and popular watering hole The Beacon Hill Tavern will pour its last pint March 31, according to NJ.com.

Among the reasons cited for closing the Beechwood Road mainstay, in business for almost a half-century, are the economic downturn, competition from other eateries and the bar's inability to extend the lease agreement with the landlord, according to the report.

The tavern, which has championed local schools and non-profits by donating a portion of their proceeds on given evenings to local causes, hopes to make its last call a special one.

Beacon Hill is my favorite place to eat in Summit. It will be missed.

March 31 will be a sad day. "The Beacon" is a part of Old Summit, so much of which is disappearing. Best of luck to whomever takes over the space; but to the staff, ownership and our friends among the patrons we are so disappointed that it's come to an end.

A piece of summit will die on march 31st. What a shame.
