Summit High School Athletics: Week in Review

Check out how the Hilltoppers performed this week.

Varsity Football 
Varsity football defeated Cranford under the lights at home on Friday 48-14. Our current record is 3-0
JV Football Last Monday, the JV team played A L Johnson and won, 12-7.  Current record: 2-0.
Freshman Football Freshman Football won 21-20 over Cranford. The team is now 3-0.
Boys V/JV Cross CountryThe team swept its dual meet against Hillside and AL Johnson on Tuesday.  Junior Jasper Ophel was the overall winner that day.  Current record: 3-0
On Saturday, the Freshmen traveled to the Stewart Memorial Invitational and placed 5th overall.  Thirteen of the sixteen runners recorded personal bests on the 2.2 mile course.The Varsity and JV went to the Bowdoin Invitational in Wappingers Falls, NY.  The course is home to the Nike Cross National Regional Qualifying Meet in November. Competing for the first time on the course, the Hilltoppers finished 10th overall out of 45 schools, including #1 in the nation, CBA; Pembroke, MA, the top NE school; and Chaminade and Port Jervis, two of the top teams in NY. The JV finished 8th overall in their race and were led by Sophomore Daniil Zhukov.
Next up:  Home dual meet against Union Catholic on Tuesday and the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel on Saturday.
Girls V/JV Cross CountryOn Tuesday, the Girls Cross Country team competed against Cranford and Hillside in a dual meet.  Summit successfully beat both teams by scoring a perfect 15 against both teams.On Saturday, the girls competed in the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational and placed 3rd out of 24 teams competing in Race C.  Gillian McIlroy paced Summit with her 4th place finish (out of 166 runners) with a time of 19:26.  Sophomore Amanda Curley was next for Summit, placing 22nd overall.  She was followed by Amanda Brodow's 27th place, Dahlia Musallam's 34th place and Anna Baumeister's 35th place.  
The JV team was led by Alex Della Sala (3rd) and Regan Britt (4th).  They placed 2nd.  Hannah Flamme, Hannah Feeney and Cate Mennig also contributed to the scoring.The freshmen finished 4th out of 10 teams and were led by Patience Baldacci's 21st place.  Mimi Feteiha, Clare Baumeister, Emi Zanelli and Elina Turner all contributed to Summit's scoring.
Coed Middle School Cross CountryThe Boys and Girls Middle School Cross Country Teams won both meets this week.On Tuesday, the Boys and Girls defeated Roxbury and Union. ~On Friday, the Boys and~Girls defeated Hillsborough. ~The Boys are 6-0. ~The Girls are 6-0.
Varsity Field HockeyWe started the week off with a win against Union.  Julia Washburn had 4 goals, Brooke Daney and Kendal Codey had two goals, Sophie Pollinger and Megan Ophel each had a goal.  On Thursday, we traveled to Montclair where we played another top twenty ranked team.  The girls played hard and pulled out a tie.  Julia Washburn scored Summit's only goal. On Saturday, we traveled to West Essex where we worked hard but fell short of a win. Our current record is 5-1-1
JV Field HockeyJV Field Hockey started the week off with a win again Union 4-0.  We tied 0-0 against Montclair on Wednesday.  Unfortunately that game was called early due to daylight.  On Saturday, we lost a well played game 3-0 to West Essex.  Our record is now 3-1-1.
Freshman Field HockeyThe freshman field hockey team had two games this week. On Thursday, the freshmen played against Montclair. Montclair was a strong team and was able to have a 3 to 0 lead over Summit before halftime. In the second half, Summit scored two goals in the first 10 minutes. The ending score was 2-4. Hilltopper weekend was a victory for the freshman team. The team was determined to beat West Essex. They dominated the entire game with 25 shots on cage and 10 corners.~ Summit had four goals scored by Caroline Phillips (3) and Stephanie Lioudis. Final score of the game was 4-0.  The freshman field hockey team's  overall record is 3-1-1.
Middle School Field HockeyThe MS Field Hockey dropped four games this week to Union, Oak Knoll (2), Kumpf respectively. Although disappointed with the actual game scores, the team continues to grow gaining stick skills, speed and confidence. Our focus is on positioning, offense and defensive strategies and basic skills. We have two games this week and a field trip to Summit High to watch Varsity FH take on Oak Knoll.
Girls V/JV GymnasticsHilltoppers gymnastics had a great week with two very successful meets. On Tuesday, September 24th, we faced Watchung Hills at home and posted another season-high score of 104.7 against Watchung's 97.075. Freshman Abby Claus won the AA (35.275), won bars (8.65), beam (9.1) and finished 2nd on floor (9.175). Freshman Alysia Lopez finished 2nd AA (34.625), vault (9.0) and~bars (8.575). Sophomore Noa Efron finished 3rd AA (34.525), 3rd on vault (8.5) and floor (9.075) and 2nd on beam (8.7). Sophomore Emily Donohue had season-high scores on~bars, beam and floor. Freshman Kiera Little earned season-high vault and floor scores. Freshman Alexis Greenblatt had a season-high beam score while freshman Ginny Collins had a season high bar score.
On Friday September 27th, we traveled to Cranford HS for the 13th Annual Cougar Classic invitational where 7 teams from around Union County competed at this tournament. Summit finished 3rd with a hard-fought 100.05. The meet awarded the top 6 on each event. Freshman Abby Claus~finished 5th AA (33.85), was 4th on beam (9.1) and 5th on bars (8.3). Freshman Alysia Lopez finished 6th AA (33.6) and was 2nd on bars (8.525). Sophomores Emily Donohue and Noa Efron attained their 2nd Sectional qualifying scores on vault.
Next week, Summit will face Cranford HS at home on Monday 9/30 at 7pm and Union Catholic HS away on Thursday October 3rd.  Our record stands at 2-2.
V/JV SailingCongratulations to our JV sailors who hosted three other schools at the Raritan Bay JV Invitational. We had five teams on the water including two Summit squads. The event was won by the Summit Gold team consisting of skippers Margot Murray and Shannon Groskoph with crew Thomas Magovern, Caitlin McNally and Jacob Ragan.This was a great way to celebrate Hilltopper Weekend!
Boys Varsity SoccerThe team had a tough week first tying Rahway 2-2 at home with goals from Daryl Martin and Eric Reyes in the draw.   The second game of the week the Hilltoppers fell 3-2 in overtime to Governor Livingston despite controlling play throughout the entire match.  Both goals were scored by Sophomore Daryl Martin, and Senior captain Nick Zachara had 6 saves.  The team's record is now 2-4-2 with Johnson on Tuesday night and Plainfield on Thursday afternoon.  The UCT will begin this Saturday.
Boys JV SoccerThe JV Boys Soccer Team went 2-0 this week, with wins over Rahway (3-0) and Governor Livingston (4-1).  This improves our overall record to 5-1-1.
Boys Freshman SoccerThe team played one game this week losing to Governor Livingston 3-2.  Current Record: 2 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie
Girls Varsity SoccerThe Girls Varsity Soccer team went 1-2 last week. We lost 2-0 to GL and 4-0 to Scotch Plains before beating Watchung Hills 3-2 on Saturday's Hilltopper Day. Current record 3-6
Girls JV SoccerThe JV girls soccer team had a great week. They played against Governor Livingston and Scotch Plains in regular season play. The team beat Governor Livingston 4-3 but fell to Scotch Plains 2-1. We also played in the Lyndhurst JV Invitational tournament this weekend and beat New Milford 3-0 and Mt. St. Dominicks 5-0. We will advance and play in the semifinals of the tournament next Saturday against Hasbrouck Heights. We are currently 6-4.
Girls Freshman SoccerFreshman Girls Soccer defeated GL this week 2-1 and lost to Scotch Plains 2-1. Next week we play Kearny away on Thursday. Current record 2-5.
Girls Varsity TennisThe Summit girls' tennis team lost two tough matches this week to Watchung Hills and Governor Livingston. Both scores were identical at 3-2. Outstanding play by Rachel Schwartz at third singles and Carly Leiter and Caroline Sayre at second doubles recorded victories this week. Captain, Kristen Miller and freshman Nicole DelRosso also recorded a victory over Watchung Hills at first doubles. The team's record stands at 1-6.
Girls JV TennisSummit JV Tennis ran into some powerhouse teams this week in a string of 4 away matches in a row. The lady Hilltoppers lost to Westfield and Watchung Hills while defeating Governor Livingston and tying Montclair Kimberly. Standout performances this week included comeback victories by Julianna Rustum and Sydney Bottum at first doubles and Erin LeGoff and Taylor Matheson's tie breaker win over GL that gave Summit a 3-2 victory. Also playing well were Morgan Freeman and Olivia DeSantis, and most improved were Ragna Neraal and Lana Feteiha. Akanksha Patel and Emily Tulsky also had an excellent match (6-2) at MK on Friday. Summit is now 4-2 with one tie with matches this week against Kent Place (h), Scotch Plains (a) and Randolph (h).
Girls Varsity VolleyballThis past week the Girls Volleyball team went 1-2. On Tuesday, we played ALJ in Summit and lost 1-2.  On Thursday, we went to Kent Place and lost 0-2. On Saturday, during Hilltopper Weekend, we beat Hillside High School 2-0. Our current recordis 2-3.
Girls JV VolleyballThe JV had another close match but lost 0-2 to the Kent Place Dragons.  The girls were able to open up a 16-13 lead in the first game, but KP served the last 6 points in a row to win 25-20.  The second game went back and forth with Summit taking a late lead 21-18, but KP served the last 7 points in a row to win 25-21.  Players of the Game were Valerie Guzman with 5 service points, 2 digs and 1 kill; and Emma Menke with 7 service points and 2 digs.
