Thirteen members of the City of Summit Police Department participated in the Police Unity Tour: “We Ride for Those Who Died” four-day, fundraising bicycle ride beginning in Trenton, NJ on Friday, May 9 and ending at the National Law Enforcement Office memorial in Washington, D.C. on Monday, May 12.
The purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty, and to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. All of the 12 Officers and one support person from Summit were able to successfully complete the ride from Trenton to Washington, D.C. while raising $23,400 for the important cause. In total, the 2014 Police Unity Tour raised $1.5 million.
“Since this was my first time being part of the Unity Tour, I did not know what to expect,” explains Summit Police Chief Robert Weck. “We all worked together and motivated one another. I am really proud of all of the Officers who participated.”

The Summit team was part of the larger Tri-County Riders team that included Officers from the nearby towns of New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Madison and Chatham among numerous others. Their ride concluded with a candlelight ceremony at the Fallen Officers Memorial.
“Being there was really emotional,” Weck continues. “It was humbling to join Officers from nearby and around the nation for the ride and the remembrance vigil. It was an incredible experience.”
