The Summit High School winter track team competed in the Group 2 State Relay championships this past Sunday. The boys placed seventh overall and Mark Jones made history by clearing 7 ft. in the high jump, only the ninth athlete in state history to accomplish that feat. Jones is currently ranked second in the nation in the event. With that clearance, he sealed the gold medal for himself and teammate Kyle Fitts. The sprint medley relay and the 3200m relay also earned medals on the boy's side. Thomas Chin anchored the sprint medley made up of Matt Espy, Justin Cyrus and Mark Jones while Jesse Taylor led the way in the 3200m relay comprised of Ryan Schreck, Griffin Cooper and Andrew Mandelbaum.

The girls team placed second in the group scoring in almost every event. Congratulations to the ladies for their outstanding effort. The girls were led by distance star Katie Watson who helped the team medal in three events. Watson started the day anchoring the Distance Medley team to a third place with the help of teammates Aleixa Diaz, Isabella Yozzi and Rebecca Cummings. Watson came back later to anchor the Sprint Medley team of Meghan Klassen, Daria Chadwick and Hallie Burke to a bronze medal. At the end of the meet, Watson joined Kirsty Gargiulo, Bridget O'Brien and Aleixa Diaz to medal in the 4x400 Relay. Meanwhile, the sprinters were also having a banner day. Daria Chadwick helped the team medal in three events as well. Daria was part of the aforementioned Sprint Medley Relay and also helped the Hilltoppers take two bronze medals in the High Jump relay and in the Shuttle Hurdles Relay. Daria was joined by Captain Sonia Guior in the High Jump and by teammates Lauren Ng and Captain Kelly Diaz and Aleixa Diaz in the Shuttle Hurdles. Aleixa was another sprinter who also had a tremendous day, helping the team place in the DM, the Shuttle Hurdles and the 4x400. The 4x800 Relay of Isabella Yozzi, Bridget O'Brien, Meghan Klassen and Kirsty Gargiulo earned a hard fought bronze medal to round out the Hilltopper effort in a highly successful championship Sunday.
