City Issues Latest Sandy-Related News, Nov. 2

Garbage collection continues Saturday and Monday.

The following is the text of the CodeRed alert phoned in to residents by Mayor Ellen Dickson today, Nov. 2

This is a City of Summit update on the storm event. 

Safety continues to be a primary concern – Please continue to limit driving to essential activities only. Trees are unstable and all downed electrical wire should be considered energized – please continue to use extreme caution. 

Electrical service is being restored to several areas of the community; as more information is provided we will update all residents.

The schedule for Summit schools next week will be determined by the school superintendent to November 5th. 

The Compost Area at the City Disposal Area is open for the disposal of branches, leaves, and limbs on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Garbage collection will continue on Saturday and Monday. 

Remaining trees in roadways are awaiting removal of energized electrical wires by JCP&L. in order to make it safe for our DPW to open the roadway.

The Elks Club located at 34 Maple Street is also open as warming and charging station.


Calvary Church, 31 Woodland Avenue, Summit is serving breakfast at 8 AM, lunch at 12 noon and dinner at 6PM.

A charging/warming station is still available at the Summit Middle School 272 Morris Avenue. 

There is bus service to New York City from Summit, information is on the City’s website.

Water quality is fine; however, please conserve water usage.

Portable generators and portable stoves MUST be operated outdoors away from any door or window. This is a good time to check the batteries your CO detectors and smoke alarms.
