City Provides Further Assistance for Hurricane Cleanup

The city has added two additional Dial-a-Truck pick-ups on September 8 and September 15 for bulky waste as a result of the storm

To further assist residents in their Hurricane Irene cleanup, the City of Summit will be doing the following:

  • The city has added two additional Dial-a-Truck pick-ups on September 8 and September 15 for bulky waste as a result of the storm.  Bulky waste is defined as large, heavy bulky items are those that are too large to fit into a passenger vehicle for disposal at the Transfer Station.  Items for Dial-a-Truck collection must be placed out at curbside, but no earlier than the evening prior to the scheduled pickup.  Collection restrictions include construction materials, hazardous materials, and propane tanks; residents can ask for further details when they schedule their Dial-a-Truck appointment.  There is also a previously scheduled pick-up on September 22.  The Division of Public Works staff will collect up to five (5) items from a residence. These pick-ups can  be scheduled by calling the Department of Community Services at 908-273-6404.  For those residents who have already called in, and received a later date, they can call in and reschedule for an earlier date. The extra dates of service will be limited to those who have storm damaged bulky items; those with regular items should wait until the September 22 date or in October.
  • For one week starting September 8 through September 15, the Division of Public Works staff will remove up to five (5) EXTRA garbage bags, weighing no more than 40 pounds each, on your regular garbage collection day.  As a reminder, garbage is defined as waste that can go to the incinerator, such as clothing, food waste, etc., and other items can be put out with the regular trash.

As a reminder, the City of Summit Transfer Station (trash, recycling center and leaf compost area), located at 40 New Providence Avenue, is open to residents Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is for use by all City residents who possess a valid vehicle ID permit.

Additionally, recycling is picked up every Thursday.  This includes paper, books, newspapers, cardboard can be placed at the curb in bundles as regular recycling.  For a full list of recycling items, please click on the “Recycle Summit” icon on the right-side of the webpage.
