Fair Sweeps the Streets Sunday

Summit Downtown Inc. sponsors third annual Street Fair and Craft Show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The bi-annual street fair is taking over downtown Summit Sunday. More than 200 artists, crafters, vendors, merchants and food concessions will offer goods in their booths while children and adults enjoy rides, games, musicians and clowns.

Members of Cirque du Soleil are scheduled to attend, said Darryl Walker, the Event Manager.  RXP-FM Radio and Radio Disney will also be providing entertainment while handing out prizes throughout the day.

Walker has managed this street fair for three years.  The event, which was formerly run by the Suburban Chamber of Commerce, was taken up by Summit Downtown Inc. three years ago.

“The street fair used to be in August when I first became a trustee,” said volunteer Events Chairman Mark Wadmond. “We decided to move it because every time there was a street fair it was 97 degrees and a lot of people might be on vacation.”

Wadmond added that the ponies and other animals couldn’t stand on the blacktop parking lot if the surface temperature was too high.

“Even when the fair in April was 78 degrees, we couldn’t have the animals because the temperature of the blacktop was over 90,” said Wadmond.  “There was no chance in the summer time.”

The street fair was also moved to Sundays so it would not disrupt retail businesses.

“When the streets are cut off, nobody’s going to get a haircut or buy a birthday card, so we moved to Sunday because most businesses are closed,” said Wadmond.

The street fair begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
