Girl Scouts Launch Red Ribbon Awareness Program

Annette Dwyer of Shaping Summit Together writes about awareness program that seeks to protect against drugs, violence

Summit's Annual program begins every second week in October with the spirit and help of the Girl Scouts. This year and 1176 put up the ribbons downtown.

The campaign slogan is "Honor the Call to Protect Against Drugs and Violence...Celebrate Life!" This is a parent, child, school and community program which calls to mind the death of DEA agent Kiki Cammerena who died in the line of duty in the midst of drug violence.

Summit's program urges people to make a conscious choice to avoid substance abuse, bullying and violence and to protect themselves and others from the ill effects of such harm.

Summit's red ribbon logo — developed by Yellow & Blue Advertising and Design in 2009 — points to a youth celebrating life without drugs and violence in it. The Girl Scout program has an anti-substance abuse curriculum as does the Boy Scout program and the Summit Public Schools.

From home to school to after-school programs and back home again, Summit's schools, community agencies, houses of worship and volunteer groups are here to support healthy lifestyles and positive choices for youth and families.
