Habitat Groundbreaking Set for Oct. 17

Family selection will occur Oct. 8.

It's been contentious. It's been debated. But it's finally going to happen.

The groundbreaking on the six-unit affordable housing project at 39 Morris Ave. is set for Oct. 17.

Blair Bravo, executive director of Morris Habitat for Humanity, who has partnered with Summit to do the Interfaith Community Build, said they have already salvaged anything they can from the home and will be demolishing it by the end of September.

The families who will be occupying the units will be selected through a lottery system on Oct. 8 and will be on hand for the groundbreaking.

"This is going to be very special," Bravo said.

The purchase of the home was paid for through the Summit Affordable Housing Trust fund. The rest of the money is coming through grants and community fundraising.

Bravo said currently 12 of the 20 congregations in Summit have pledged money and fundraising is about halfway toward the goal.

While Bravo said the site should be ready for volunteers to help build the units by November, the project is still a long way from being completed.

"I have to goal to finish in December of 2011," she said.
