Halloween Arrives at Junior League Shop

Shop rolls out Halloween customers, decor.

Halloween is here – or so it seems – at the Junior League Shop.

The shop window features a cheerful witch and a stack of grinning jack o’lanterns, just in time for the October Halloween Event.  Throughout the month, the shop will feature costumes for infants, kids, and adults. Also available are as are home décor items, masks, makeup, and assorted spooky attire. The shop will celebrate Halloween for all of October, featuring seasonal goods and ghoulish accessories, in addition to regular clothes, toys, and items for the home.

Colleen Markley, Shop Chairwoman, notes that such seasonal merchandise is an especially good bargain.

“A typical Halloween costume is worn for a few hours at the most,” she explains. “Many of these costumes and accessories are in pristine condition.”

Because the Junior League Shop has storage space, members are able to put aside costumes and other Halloween-themed items all year long, unpacking
them as the holiday approaches.

“We might have someone donate costumes on November 1st, and we’re able to put those donations aside for nearly a year.” Markley credits Shop Manager Sally Hoiles with keeping the stock organized and easy to find.

For customers, this means a wealth of costumes, hats, and seasonal surprises. Lori, a regular at the Junior League Shop, said, “It’s the little finds that bring me here.”

Sure enough, she left laden with a bag full of accessories and fish costume. Colleen, another frequent customer, said, “You have enjoy treasure-hunting, and I do.” Both
women admire the décor of the store, which includes seasonal window
displays.

Markley is delighted that “volunteer extraordinaire” Phyllis Dell “does windows.” Dell’s efforts beautify the shop inside and out; volunteers joke that anything Dell displays sell almost immediately due to her eye for putting together an outfit or an ensemble.

While the costumes sell briskly, the Shop also features orange-and-black sweaters, necklaces, t-shirts and hats, many in adult sizes.  This morning’s customers focused on princess attire and cowboy hats, but Halloween pencils and treat bags sold briskly, as well.

Prices range from $1 for a trick-or-treat bag, to $2 for most hats, up to about $10 for an adult flapper costume.  Most children’s costumes are priced around $6, while seasonal t-shirts cost about $4. Home accessories vary in price, but a large candy bowl was priced at $4, while a coffee mug and matching plate, originally from
Williams-Sonoma, cost $3 total.

“This is a nice opportunity to save a few dollars, especially since many holiday items are worn very briefly,” notes Markley.

The customers seem to agree; Halloween is the season to save at the Junior
League Shop.
