Letter to the Editor: Memorial Day Parade No Place for Politics

A couple of Summit residents express their frustration over the politicizing of Memorial Day.

This year, as in many prior years, we participated in Summit’s Memorial Day Parade. We feel a deep sense of pride that Summit supports and honors our active troops, our veterans, especially those who died in protecting our freedoms. The town’s support of the parade and the memorial service that follows is heart-warming. The participation by residents and neighbors of all ages and by so many organizations reinforces the sense of community commemorating this important day.

We were disappointed to see that some members of the Republican Party, against the requests of the organizers, chose to politicize the day by distributing balloons that listed their candidates. Let’s remember why we come together as a community on Memorial Day and let us send a strong message to those who chose to focus on themselves that their behavior has no place in Summit on Memorial Day. Memorial Day should be wholly dedicated to the memory of the veterans and should not be used as a campaign opportunity.

While our veterans have died protecting our freedoms, including our freedom of speech, this is one day that should not include campaigning.
