Nearly 600 Without Power in Summit

A spokesman for Jersey Central Power and Light confirmed that there were 595 outages in the Hill City due to thunderstorms.

One thing most Summit residents have gotten used to in the past year is the fury of nature. Whether it's a snow storm two months too early or a powerful tropical storm that floods the streets. Today's rain storm, while short, brought its own problems.

, nearly double the amount sat in homes without AC or television. Summit Patch reader Scott Ryan left a Facebook message "Over 600 people in summit with no power since 2p.m. in the Mountain Avenue — Primrose area," he wrote.

A call to JCP&L confirmed that 595 customers were without power. "When you have thunder and lightening you get power outages," said spokesman Gerry Ricciardi. He couldn't confirm the cause of the outage, but said it was possible lightning struck power lines or a tree. Ricciardi said that none of the outages in the last two days were heat related.

Officials at JCP&L could not confirm when power would be restored to Summit residents, but encouraged anyone with an outtage to contact the company at 1-888-544-4877.

Here is a checklist provided by JCP&L for residents without power:

What to Do if You Lose Power

Check your neighbors to see if their power is out, too, or if only your location is affected.

If only your lights are out:

  1. Check your circuit breakers or fuses.
  2. If no breaker is tripped or fuse is blown, the problem may be in the connection between our wires and your home. Call our toll-free, 24-hour Outage Reporting Line, 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877).
  3. Follow the other steps to take during an outage.

If your neighbors' lights are out, too:

  1. Call us. We may not know that your power is out unless you notify us. To help us respond most effectively, use our toll-free, 24-hour Outage Reporting Line, 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877).
