Passaic River Closes Two Bridges

Bridge Avenue and Central Avenue are closed. The river, according to the National Weather Service, is at 7.9 feet.

The Passaic River has overflown its banks and closed two area bridges.

The Bridge Avenue and Central Avenue bridges are both closed due to flooding. A car also remains stuck on the Central Avenue bridge.

Summit Superintendent of Public Works Paul Cascais said the river has receded some since yesterday when it was just a few feet shy of the curb.

"It was the highest I've seen it in many years," he said. 

According to the National Weather Service, the river is at 7.9 feet. Chatham Township police say the bridges will likely not reopen until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Stanley Park in Chatham is also partially underwater with picnic tables and grills inaccessible.
